We’re so excited to share our latest features and improvements to the Embrace dashboard!

In this post, we’ll give a walkthrough of an update to our Alerts system, where you can now go directly from the Alert Detail page to the corresponding Log Details or Error Logging page.

We’ve previously rolled out support for linking to the Crash Details page and Path Details page from an Alert Detail page, and we’re excited to extend this linking to log alerts as well.

Here’s what we’ll cover in this post:

  • Navigating from the Alert Detail page to the Log Details page
  • Navigating from the Alert Detail page to the Error Logging page

When you receive a log alert in either Slack or email, you can currently click the “Click here to view” link to be taken directly to the corresponding Log Details or Error Logging page.

To go directly to a Log Details page, the alert must be configured to trigger for a specific message and type combination. Otherwise, the alert will link to the Error Logging page and apply any specified filters (e.g. app versions, type of log).

This update adds this linking functionality to our Alert Detail pages as well. First, head to the Triggered Alerts section and click on an alert.

Previously, you’ve seen a screen like the following. You can view and edit the monitor, but there’s no way to navigate to the Log Details page for the specific log in question.

Now, there’s a green button that says “Open Log Details”. You can click it to be taken to the Log Details page for the corresponding log.

The following is an example of a Log Details page that would be linked to in the above scenario.

Note that for this to work, the alert must satify the following conditions:

  • Metric is set to “Log Count” or “Log User Percentage”
  • Breakout By is set to “Message”
  • Filter is added for “Type”

If you have the “Show All Messages” tab checked, then the button will instead link to the Error Logging page and apply any filters that are specified in the alert. We’ll go more into detail on that in the next section.

For log alerts that aren’t grouped by message, this update adds a green button that says “Discover in Error Logging” to the Alert Detail page.

The same green button appears for monitors that are grouped by message and have toggled the “Show All Messages” tab. This offers a way to inspect how the behavior of logs with different message and type combinations compare to the thresholds.

You can click the green button to be taken to the Error Logging page, and it will have the filters from the monitor’s configuration applied. In the above example, the monitor has the filters of “type” and “app version”, and we can see those filters are persisted in the linked page.

And that’s it! Now, it’s easy to dive into the details of a triggered log alert from either a Slack/email notification or from within the Alerts page of our dashboard. We strive to get you to the data you care about as quickly as possible, and this update adds another way to save time when debugging log issues.

As always, please share any feedback so we can continue to build features and improvements that help your team be successful.
